SMT Debuts Avacuno World’s First Software-Only Solution for Realtime Playback of High-Definition AVC/h.264 and VC-1 Encoded Video

Sequoyan Media Technology Inc. has announced the availability of Avacuno version 1.0, a turnkey solution for non-DXVA playback of high-definition AVC/h.264 & VC-1 video streams. Avacuno delivers decoded content via HD-SDI, providing the best possible quality for reproduction of the compressed image and yielding more accurate verification than output via DVI/HDMI.

Instead of having to use three different hardware devices to play the streams, clients are able to use Avacuno to perform quality control in all three codecs at one workstation. Avacuno enables DVD production companies to easily accomplish tasks essential to performing quality control on compressed video streams. Key features include time search, frame grab, multi-frame record, and frame stepping, all of which are easily controlled using a JLCooper jog/shuttle unit. A soon-to-be-released upgrade will add split-screen functionality, allowing side-by-side comparisons of the master YUV file and the encoded content, or even side by side comparisons of two competing HD formats.

AVC/h.264 and VC-1, the two primary video compression formats chosen for Blu-ray and HD DVD, are extremely demanding due to advanced compression algorithms and the amount of data encoded in each stream. Avacuno overcomes these challenges by leveraging HD decoding technology from MainConcept and VC-1 decoding technology from Microsoft to deliver what SMT calls the cleanest software-powered output of AVC and VC-1 currently available.

Background on VC-1 VC-1 is the SMPTE standard based on Windows Media Video 9. VC-1 delivers high quality video at all resolutions, from handheld devices to high definition. VC-1 can be used to deliver content using physical formats like optical media, through existing infrastructures using the MPEG-2 transport stream, or over IP-based networks for play back via the PC, set top box or handheld device.

Avacuno is available with or without a workstation and runs on Windows XP. Please contact SMT regarding pricing, feature information, and system requirements.
