Sony Releases Info on Playing Back Commercial Blu-ray Disc Movies Using the Sony BWU-100A Blu-ray Disc Rewritable Drive
Posted Sep 28, 2006 Print Version     Page 1of 1

The Sony BWU-100A Blu-ray Disc rewritable drive is a multi-format burner that can record up to 50GB of data or about 230 minutes of HDV1080i video on double layer 50 GB BD-RE recordable media. It can also record DVD and CD discs.

The CyberLink PowerDVD software that is presently included with the drive can play back "BDAV format" Blu-ray Discs that were recorded with the BWU-100A, as well as traditional DVD video discs. An upgrade to the CyberLink PowerDVD software is required for playing back commercial Blu-ray Disc movies (also known as BD-ROMs) on a computer monitor or large screen HDTV using the BWU-100A drive. Additionally, hardware upgrades to the PC may also be required for BD-ROM playback.

Beginning in October, Sony will provide purchasers of the BWU-100A Blu-ray Disc Rewritable drive with an upgrade to the CyberLink PowerDVD software which will provide BD-ROM playback compatibility. This upgrade, which has been previously unavailable, will be offered as an electronic download and will be free of charge.
