All commercially available writable DVD discs use a write layer that is chemically changed by a disc drive’s laser. The laws of physics and logic suggest that materials that do not experience a permanent physical change will not last. Data written in this way will be corrupted over time and cannot be permanent. In fact, natural processes are enough to corrupt the data on the DVD in just a few years. The National Archives warns that the shelf-life of a regular DVD is only 2-5 years.
