Unequivocally, I can say TDK's new 24X FireWire is the single coolest drive I've ever played with. It works perfectly as advertised, tearing off full-disc burns in four minutes with perfect playback, and keeps BURN-Proof handy for the cowed crowd. It ships with an app-packed hybrid software disc including Nero 5.5 and Digital MixMaster for the PC, and ToastLite for the Mac. Toast Lite features Toast Audio Extractor, which rips at a roaring 40X and never misses a beat. $315.99 www.tdk.com

With well-rounded software bundles, solid rewritable performance, respectable CD-R/RW functions, the fastest writing speeds in recordable DVD, and the option to write to more affordable DVD+R discs, the Sony DRU120A and HP DVD Writer 200e have a lot going for them. However, when all is said and done, our test results here put DVD+R and DVD+RW short of DVD-R and DVD-RW when it comes to physical compatibility with current DVD devices and on low-cost blank media. But keep in mind that DVD products are still in their infancy, and much could change with next-generation products due within the year.

The QPS Que! Fire 40X/12X/48X CD-RW drive is a sturdy, solid plug-n-play unit that's tailor-made for Macintosh users. It's a mystery, then, why it comes bundled with Charismac's notoriously temperamental Discribe software. With the right mastering package–in this case, Roxio's Toast Titanium 5.0–the drive performs wonderfully, churning out disc after disc without fail.

QPS Que! USB 2.0 DVD Burner Synopsis: QPS’s new Que! DVD-Recorder is the first drive based on Pioneer’s Editor’s Choice-winning A03 to use a USB 2.0 interface, and the drive and the interface prove mightily up to the challenge at hand. It writes DVD-R at 2X and CD-R/RW at 8X, like all A03 derivatives; it burns seams-bursting DVD-5s in under 29 minutes. The Que! drive also comes with a nifty software bundle, including PowerDVD for DVD playback, Easy CD Creator 5 (standard edition) for CD recording, and medioStream’s wonderful neoDVD for entry-level DVD authoring and recording. Some bundles also include for promotional purposes an unidentified 2-port USB 2.0 PCI host adapter.
