Jan Ozer | Ulead DVD MovieFactory ($79.99) is the best choice I’ve seen for video producers who need to deliver both Blu-ray and HD DVD for their clients now. HD DVD authoring is about what you’d expect in terms of DVD authoring from a consumer product, but Blu-ray is more limited. If you need menus on your Blu-ray discs, Roxio DVDit Pro HD is a better choice, but it costs a bunch more and has its own player-related issues.

For many of us—early adopters or not—2005 was the Year of HDV. But there was much more to 2005 than HDV. We saw scads of significant products released that had nothing to do with HDV and of course, event and corporate videographers the world over continuing to do dazzling, innovative, and effective everyday work with or without HDV. To provide readers with a highly subjective “Year in Review” report, we asked EventDV’s many esteemed and opinionated columnists and contributing editors to reflect on the new products they saw in 2005 and tell us what struck them as the most exciting, and the biggest boon to their own work.

For those who bet that Apple would soon lead the way in integrated multi-application postproduction suites, Final Cut Studio pays off handsomely. Avid Xpress Studio HD is far more expensive than the competition. But consider what you’re getting: three industry-standard, time-proven editing interfaces in Xpress Pro, Pro Tools LE, and Avid 3D, and solid DVD authoring technology from Sonic in Avid DVD, that are continuing to evolve and grab features from their high-end siblings.

I’ll deal with the second five here.

Never has a consumer product in the digital media space packed so much power and versatility and made it so easy to get to. For application triage, Creator 7 has no peer. With the exception of the (still) disappointingly limited DVD Builder, they are all fine tools, and there are logical (and usually multiple) ways to navigate between them. What’s more, it’s got a mind-boggling price: it’s hard to argue with a suite jam-packed with top-notch apps for $99.

Impression DVD-Pro has several features, like support for two camera angles and multiple-labguage and subtitle streams, that are unavailable on similarly priced products like DVD Workshop or DVDit! If you need these features, you can spend $599 for Impression, or $1500 for ReelDVD. These features are not available on Impression DVD SE, which will be bundled with many Pinnacle products-you'll have to pay $399 for the upgrade. If you're a graphics designer intimate with Photoshop, you'll probably like Impression, and you probably won't find the learning curve all that steep. If you're a sales, marketing, or training professional without a designer, you'll probably find DVD Workshop a better choice, even if you receive Impression in a bundle.

QPS Que! USB 2.0 DVD Burner Synopsis: QPS’s new Que! DVD-Recorder is the first drive based on Pioneer’s Editor’s Choice-winning A03 to use a USB 2.0 interface, and the drive and the interface prove mightily up to the challenge at hand. It writes DVD-R at 2X and CD-R/RW at 8X, like all A03 derivatives; it burns seams-bursting DVD-5s in under 29 minutes. The Que! drive also comes with a nifty software bundle, including PowerDVD for DVD playback, Easy CD Creator 5 (standard edition) for CD recording, and medioStream’s wonderful neoDVD for entry-level DVD authoring and recording. DVD hasn't quite replaced VHS in the home-rental arena where Blockbuster stakes its considerable claim. But thanks to the format's random access and programmability, DVD is making it much easier for the rental giant to exploit point-of-purchase video display as a revenue-enhancing profit center. Here's how Blockbuster made DVD work for POP.

Synopsis: With Edition, Pinnacle's first-release version of the mature FastStudio software they acquired from Fast Multimedia, DV video producers in particular have a new, very affordable tool that can work on anything from a desktop to notebook with professional functionality and results. Edition is a new tool in today's digital studio, and part of a new trend of capable, yet affordable tools. It stands rightly a notch above Premiere and is priced and positioned aggressively against the real competition from editing solutions like Final Cut and Avid's XPress DV. That alone should give you reason enough to take a look.

Synopsis: USB Instant DVD is a featherweight plastic box with lots of I/O and, from the looks of things, not much else—besides nifty interior chipware that keeps MPEG encoding out of sight and out of mind. Designed to be a sort of digital-studio-in-a-box, Instant certainly doesn't make your PC into the same sort of video production powerhouse as, say, Final Cut Pro or Premiere, much less higher-priced MPEG encoding hardware. But it captures and encodes full-frame MPEG-2 and delivers it to your hard drive via USB in malleable shape, and comes with software to edit and prepare it for VCD or DVD output. If sadly misnamed "quick and dirty" capture-to-chapter DVD creation is what you have in mind, Instant DVD definitely gets a dirty job done.
