The world's first Qflix drive bundle--hardware by PLDS, software by Sonic, media by Ritek, movie site by CinemaNow, sales by Dell--does everything it should do, from simple-and-seamless download-to-burn of movies from the Qflix catalog to general-purpose DVD and CD burning. The selection of burn-ready CinemaNow movies is still quite limited, and the jury remains out on whether consumers will buy into Qflix's drive- and disc-specific restrictions, but there's no question the PLDS drive and Roxio Venue application are effectively holding up their end of the bargain.
Hugh Bennett | LG's Super Multi Blue Rewriter GGW-H20L offers sound writing performance, broad media compatibility, LightScribe facility and provides BD, HD DVD, and DVD video playback for those with mixed movie collections. Realistically, however, it’s expensive fare for all but die-hard enthusiasts and professionals but should prove to be a fine choice for those needing Blu-ray capabilities today.

Hugh Bennett | For similar money to Pioneer's BDR-101A, the PX-B900A offers more features including dual-layer BD-R/RE burning, superior blank media support, and CD reading and writing abilities, as well as a functional software suite. That said, it's still early in the game and BD recorders of all stripes need time to mature and reach an affordable price level to attract a larger audience. But Plextor has made a good start.

Geoff Daily | As with DVD, proper testing is essential for producing a quality, replication-ready HD disc. Given the exponentially more complex inner workings of next-gen discs and the current state of the technological ecosphere built up around these products, testing disc images has produced a string of challenges.
Hugh Bennett | Some suggest the conflict between Blu-ray Disc (BD) and HD DVD can be resolved by simply offering devices compatible with both formats. I’m not so sure. It’s easy to paint a rosy picture of peaceful coexistence, but compromise comes at a price.

Hugh Bennett | After consumers have begun to make some sense out of writable DVD formats, along comes more confusion. Dual-layer recordable technology is promoted as a significant advance, but where does it fit in the real world?
It’s hard to beat Sonicfire Pro for all-around soundtrack creation flexibility and functionality. The interface is clean and intuitive, and it’s flat-out a breeze to learn. If you’re only going to buy one soundtrack creation tool, and you’re not a composer yourself, Sonicfire Pro’s the way to go.
With DVD MovieFactory 3 Disc Creator ($99), the first version of Ulead’s popular consumer tool to add CD burning, Ulead takes the lead in pared-down but purposeful editing capability with its multitrim feature. It also adds a solid CD burning tool in Burn. Now, continues its strong tradition of pleasing DVD and slideshow authoring, and makes sure all the parts hang together with impressive ease.
