GVS Introduces Powerful, Economical Solution for Video Production Data Management

A new solution for the formidable challenge of cataloging, labeling, and quickly accessing volumes of video and audio will be introduced by GVS (Grande Vitesse Systems) of San Francisco at the Network+Interop Convention in Las Vegas this week.

The Tracker DDM (Digital Data Management) software provides all of the tools needed throughout the video and audio production process, from logging unedited footage to archiving finished productions. Included are the cataloging engine and the technologies that streamline the handling of all components including thumbnails, metadata, and a large quantity of user-defined production attributes.

The GVS Tracker DDM is productive in a standalone desktop application or in a workgroup environment supporting a robust enterprise. It's fully accessible through a dedicated network or the Internet.  In either case, it takes just moments to file or to query then access a program segment, along with all related data (clip name, description, project status, particulars of the shoot, etc.) working on either the Mac or Windows platform.

GVS Tracker DDM allows a clip with its time codes, in-and-out values, thumbnails, and all other user-required data to be loaded to a local file system or published via http and HTML to a web server.

Among the Tracker DDM tools are the following:

?Ä¢ Analog scene change detection utilities with sensitivity tuning to allow for fast review when searching for specific camera shots

?Ä¢ Robust query engine supporting any number of search terms, plus OR and AND operations

?Ä¢ Unlimited user-defined data management fields, automated textual replacement capabilities for application across any logging field, and regular expression pattern matching

?Ä¢ Time zone adjustments command so clock differences from cameras in various world locations can be noted

?Ä¢ A full range of customizable preview settings

The standard version, designed for local server applications, will be offered at an introductory price of $995 per license.  The enterprise solution for workgroups starts at $2995.

Analog Devices Announces New Blackfin eMedia Platform

Analog Devices, Inc., a global leader in high performance semiconductors for signal processing applications, recently announced a new programmable processor that brings Microsoft Windows Media 9 Series audio and video quality to a whole new class of consumer electronics devices at a 50 percent cost advantage over competing processor solutions. Applying its core competency in signal processing and implementing media compression technologies, Analog Devices is introducing the new Blackfin eMedia Platform to help fuel the move from ASIC to programmable DSP-based chip designs for a broad range of audio/video devices. Windows Media 9 Series support in the Blackfin eMedia platform offers the ability to deliver the same high quality video consumers expect with files 1/3 the size of MPEG 2 and 1/2 the size of MPEG4. This combination is designed to meet the needs of next-generation digital audio/video entertainment products, including set top boxes, portable entertainment devices, smart displays, portable personal video recorders, and digital media devices for the home.

Analog Devices' new Blackfin eMedia Platform is based on ADI's Blackfin Processor, which provides high performance signal processing, low power consumption, and optimized features for video and audio processing required for advanced multimedia devices. ADI's Blackfin Processor meets the computational demands and power constraints of a broad range of mass-market consumer devices by combining best-in-class digital signal processing performance with microcontroller functionality.

Analog Devices' ADSP-BF532eM10 is the first in a roadmap of products within the company's new Blackfin eMedia Platform to support multimedia applications for the consumer market. As a low power, low cost encoder/decoder device, the ADSP-BF532eM10 delivers the flexible, software-based implementation of advanced video formats that consumer electronics OEMs have been demanding. The ADSP-BF532eM10 is a single-chip device able to decode and share high quality D1 (30 frames per second) multimedia content at unprecedented price levels by offering the most power-efficient and highest performance 16-bit processor-based encoder/decoder for Windows Media Video 9 Series. With its 100% programmable implementation, the ADSP-BF532eM10 has the flexibility to decode and encode any audio/video format. The ADSP-BF532eM10 offers significant savings and flexibility to manufacturers at a sub-$12.00 price point, representing a greater than 50 percent cost advantage over competing solutions. With active power consumption of under 600mW for DVD-quality Windows Media Video 9 video decoding, the ADSP-BF532eM10 delivers one of the lowest power consumptions available.

Samples of the Blackfin eMedia Platform are available now. The ADSP-BF532eM10 is priced at $11.95 each, in quantities of 100,000 units.

New Wolfson DAC with PC Interface

A stereo audio DAC that brings high performance audio to the PC motherboard has been introduced by Wolfson Microelectronics. PCI sound cards, Net connected Hi-fi systems, and HDD based media servers can benefit from the Wolfson WM9709's Intel specified AC-Link architecture.

Initially developed for a games platform, Wolfson's WM9709 is one of the world's first DACs that addresses emerging consumer audio applications using PC technology. PCs typically use the AC'97 standard but have not previously demanded the highest performance audio, whereas consumer audio products generally use higher performance DACs with an I(2)S type interface. WM9709 combines a high-performance 20-bit stereo DAC with an AC'97 control and data interface, commonly used on most motherboards.

Operating from a supply voltage of 3.3V or mixed 3V digital, 5V analog, the WM9709 provides an audio performance of 102dB SNR and -95dB Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The device supports surround, center, and LFE channels.

Complete reference design documentation and evaluation boards are available now.

Dell Enters Game/Video Enthusiast Market with New Dimension System

Dell has introduced the Dimension XPS, its most powerful and expandable consumer desktop system to date. The Dimension XPS is designed to provide a high level of performance in 3D gaming, high-end multimedia applications, and demanding productivity applications.

The Dimension XPS offers hardware features that deliver high performance and system expansion. With its standard 460-watt power supply, Creative Audigy 2 sound card, 128MB ATI Radeon 9800 and 9800 Pro graphics cards, support for the latest Intel processors, and Serial ATA hard drives in a RAID 0 or RAID 1 configuration, the XPS is built to smoothly run today's most demanding 3D games and multimedia applications.

The Dimension XPS features a large, Venice blue, tower chassis with midnight gray and brushed silver accents. For customers interested in future expansion, it accommodates up to three 5.25-inch drive bays and up to three internal 3.5-inch bays. To accommodate external expansion, the XPS system features two 1394 ports and eight USB 2.0 ports. It is the first Dimension to have a front-accessible 1394 port, which offers a new level of convenience for digital video enthusiasts. The tower houses a 460-watt power supply at the bottom of the chassis to separate it from the main interior of the system. The innovative chassis design results in a quieter system and also makes internal components easy to access for maintenance and upgrades.

Because many customers want peripherals optimized for fast-paced 3D games, Dell offers a suite of game controllers, joysticks, mice, and speakers within the Dimension XPS configurator located at Dell's Web site. Additionally, all systems come standard with dedicated XPS Phone Support. Through a unique Express Service Code, Dimension XPS customers can dial into a dedicated XPS support queue staffed by advanced technicians who are knowledgeable about 3D gaming and video-intensive applications.

For $2,199, the Dimension XPS features a 3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading Technology and an 800MHz front side bus, 256MB DDR400 SDRAM memory, a Radeon 9800 graphics card, a Creative Audigy 2 sound card, a 60GB hard drive, a 16x DVD drive, a 19-inch (18-inch viewable) monitor, Windows XP Home, one year limited warranty plus one year at-home service, and dedicated Dimension XPS technical phone support.
